TRANSPORT UNION LEADER BOB CROW TO ADDRESS RALLY IN QUEENS GARDENS, HULL, ON
SATURDAY 30 MAY 2009
Bob Crow, General Secretary of the RMT transport union, will address a
public rally in Hull’s Queens Gardens on Saturday 30 May 2009, it was
announced over the Bank-Holiday week-end.
The rally, organised by the local Euro-election Campaign Committee of
No2EU – Yes to Democracy (a joint election campaign including the RMT and
several left-wing and green political parties) will be to protest at New
Labour and EU plans to privatise public services, including the Royal Mail,
and also to promote the campaign’s list of candidates in the Euro-election
on 4 June. Other speakers will include local RMT Regional Secretary Pete
March, well known Hull trade unionist and leader of the recent strike at
Lindsey Oil refinery, Keith Gibson and Celia Foote, National Secretary of
the Alliance for Green Socialism (all three are Yorkshire and Humberside
candidates in the European elections).
Pete March told reporters:
"We are delighted to welcome the General Secretary of my union to Hull
and we’re sure his message of opposition to the enforced privatisation of
our public services by diktat from unelected European Commission bureaucrats
will ring a bell with voters in this area. I urge people in Hull to come
along to Queens Gardens to hear Bob and the others on Saturday – and don’t
worry about missing the Cup Final as we’ll be finishing well in time to
watch it ourselves” .
Celia Foote of the Alliance for Green Socialism (AGS) added:
“The AGS is pleased to be sharing a platform with Bob Crow, who has led
the fight against the privatisation of all our public services, not just the
railways, which is proving so disastrous for workers and for the public in
general. However, we are not just against privatisation and the awful plan
to let the fat cats get even richer by buying and selling the right to emit
carbon pollution. We also have a positive agenda for a greener, fairer and
more democratic Europe where we desperately need co-operation and
collaboration to combat climate change and environmental disaster. This is
what the EU Commission needs to concentrate on, not just ever-more schemes
to let Euro-fat-cats get even fatter at the expense of ordinary workers.”
The rally will start at 1.00pm on Saturday 30 May in Queens Gardens in the
centre of Hull.
