AGS Press Release

BY-ELECTION CANDIDATE WITHDRAWS

Jeannie Sutton has withdrawn her candidacy for Hyde Park and Woodhouse. Find out why.

Issued Wednesday 27 January 2010
For immediate release

Jeannie Sutton, whose nomination papers for the Leeds Council by-election in Hyde Park & Woodhouse were accepted by the Returning Officer last week, has withdrawn her candidacy. Jeannie was standing for the Alliance for Green Socialism, a party that has run many candidates in Leeds over previous years.

Explaining her decision, Jeannie Sutton said: "I am withdrawing my candidacy for the Hyde Park & Woodhouse by-election in favour of Adele Beeson, who is standing primarily to prevent the closure of City of Leeds High School.

"Adele is a local parent with a child at the school. She has the support of local people, who are tired of being pushed around by the Tory LibDem council and the Labour government. Her campaign includes many of the issues which I believe to be important for local community, including keeping City of Leeds School, community use of the Royal Park school site, and stopping the scandalous attempt to sell off the Leeds Girls High playing fields.

"The Alliance for Green Socialism, who nominated me, believes in genuine community power, not the sham 'consultations' used by the council and Education Leeds. The AGS is happy to stand down in favour of a local parent."

Mike Davies, Secretary of Leeds Alliance for Green Socialism, commented on behalf of the AGS:

"The Alliance for Green Socialism believes strongly in real local democracy. Here we have a local parent with the backing of teachers and parents at her local school, campaigners on other important community issues and many local people. We think the issues on which she is standing are so important that we have withdrawn our own candidate and are backing Adele Beeson in the by-election.

"It is most regrettable that other parties claiming to support community politics, including the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats, have refused to withdraw in favour of this genuine community candidate.

"Of course, all the major parties are part of the decision to close City of Leeds School. The Labour government wants it closed – indeed, Ed Balls has written to Education Leeds demanding its closure. Leeds Council, controlled by the Lib Dems and the Tories, intends to close it. None of the three main parties care about the wishes and needs of local people and their children."
